FORT SCOTT, Kan - In response to a critical water shortage, city officials have put a comprehensive Water Warning Plan into effect in Fort Scott.

The plan, consisting of multiple stages, aims to tackle the shortage of water reserves through a series of strategic measures.

Presently, the city finds itself in Stage One of the Water Warning Plan, a phase triggered as the city's water storage capacity fell below seventy percent. This stage, which requires a longer-than-normal recovery period, is marked by stringent goals.

Officials aim to curtail peak water demand by a substantial twenty percent and concurrently reduce overall weekly water consumption by ten percent.

To meet these objectives, the city has undertaken several proactive initiatives. Closely monitoring water supplies, promptly repairing detected leaks within a 24-hour window, and scaling back non-essential city activities such as hydrant flushing, street cleaning, fountain operations, and certain outdoor water usage activities like watering grounds and vehicle washing are some of the measures to be implemented.

In light of these measures, city residents are expected to play an integral role in the conservation efforts. Among the advised steps, optimizing indoor water usage efficiency takes precedence.

Additionally, residents are urged to restrict outdoor water usage exclusively to the hours before 10 AM and after 9 PM. Furthermore, curtailing non-essential water-intensive activities, such as washing vehicles and filling swimming pools, is strongly encouraged.

City authorities underscore the criticality of the situation, stating that although Cedar Creek's water supply remains relatively stable, reliance on Lake Fort Scott may become necessary. In such an eventuality, the Water Warning Plan will escalate to Stage Two, warranting more stringent restrictions on water usage.

City officials emphasize that this is an ongoing drought situation that demands a collective effort. Their primary commitment is to secure sustainable water levels for the city's residents. As they rally citizens to adhere to the prescribed water usage restrictions, they remain open to inquiries from concerned individuals seeking further clarification.
