Route 194 reopens in York County PA after grain truck rollover

A section of Route 194 in York County reopened after six hours of closures Monday following a crash between a semi-truck hauling grain and a box truck, officials said.

Both drivers, the only occupants in each vehicle, were taken to local hospitals for their injuries, said Northeast Adams Fire & EMS Chief Cory Lease.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5:36 a.m. at the intersection of Davidsburg Road and Route 194 in Washington Township, according to Lease.

Lease said crews had to extricate the driver of the semi-truck, who was trapped inside the upside-down cab when firefighters arrived. Crews had to cut the roof of the truck open with a saw in order to free the driver, who was laying on the roof of the interior.

While crews initially anticipated a more complicated, lengthy rescue operation, firefighters had the truck driver extricated in fewer than 10 minutes. “Things went smoothly for what it was,” Lease said, noting that if the driver’s legs had been pinned the rescue operation could have taken more than an hour. The semi-truck, which was hauling a large amount of grain, rolled onto its roof and dumped the grain in the roadway, leading to extensive cleanup efforts. Route 194 was closed between Lake Meade Road and Davidsburg Road for the duration of the cleanup. Street sweeper vehicles were used to get the grain off the roadway, Lease said.

The roadway was reopened around 11:05 a.m. Monday after the trucks, and their contents, were removed from Route 194.

The driver of the box truck, which was hauling garbage bins, was able to get out of the vehicle on their own, Lease said.

The York County Hazardous Materials Team was called to the scene due to a leaking diesel saddle tank on the semi-truck, said Lease, but crews were able to plug the tank and control the spill prior to the arrival of HAZMAT.

Northeast Adams Fire & EMS was also assisted by Dover Township Volunteer Fire Department.
