A person died after a street sweeper collided with a big rig Monday morning in Manteca, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred around 8:27 a.m. on the southbound Highway 99 off-ramp to Lathrop Road. A big rig was parked on the right shoulder outside traffic lanes when, for unknown reasons, a street sweeper struck it from behind at a speed of around 40 mph, CHP said.

The driver of the street sweeper was unrestrained at the time of the crash, which resulted in critical injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where they later died, CHP said.

A passenger in the big rig was uninjured. It is not believed that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. Anyone with information related to this incident can call CHP at 209-938-4800.
